Metal detecting changed how I read old plow lines
I used to only look at surface finds and walk right past dug-up field edges. Three years ago, after a wet spring near Gettysburg, I started digging where old furrows turned, not just where the high spots were. Found a 1780s buckle at 14 inches that a dozen trips missed. Now I map soil discolorations with a GPS app before I even swing the coil. The popular theory says follow the trash scatter, but I think the deep plow cuts tell a better story. Anyone else trust soil marks over artifact spreads on worked ground?
