I just blew $80 on a 'Roman coin' from a market that turned out to be a modern replica.

The seller swore it was from a dig near Pompeii, but a quick check with a magnet at home proved it was fake, so has anyone else gotten burned buying artifacts online?

At least you didn't pay for the "certificate of authenticity" too.

That "certificate of authenticity" line is funny because it's true. But the real scam is how they make you feel like you're getting a special deal. They price the basic thing low to get you in, then hit you with ten add-ons that feel necessary. The certificate is just the final joke on a bill that's already too high. It preys on the worry that your purchase isn't legit without their official paper. So you're right, skipping it is a small win in a rigged game.

Sounds like a lot of fuss over a piece of paper.
