The cable lacing mistake I made for 12 years
I was doing removals with a 150 foot rope and always tied my friction hitch with a triple wrap. Last month a climber from Portland, Oregon watched me and asked why I wasn't using a Blake's hitch with a longer tail. He showed me how my knot was binding up on descents and causing extra wear on the rope. Has anyone else been running the same knot for years only to find out there's a safer, smoother way?

That bit about the triple wrap binding up on descents hit me. Did you ever notice the rope smoking or getting those fuzzy spots right where the hitch was riding? I had a similar thing with a tautline hitch for way too long and figured the wear was just normal. What made you finally clock that the extra wraps were the problem, was it a bad slip or just him pointing it out?
