Why does nobody talk about fruit flies in small space composting?
I've had a compost bin on my balcony for a while now. In my experience, fruit flies show up no matter what I do. I tried adding more dry leaves and paper, but they still find a way. It's frustrating because I want to reduce waste, but the bugs are a real turn-off. Last week, I had to deal with a cloud of them when I added banana peels. I'm starting to think sealed bins are the only answer for apartments. Has anyone else found a better fix?

Is it just me, or does compost get a sweet smell when fruit flies show up? I had a bin that got really bad once, and it smelled like rotten apples left in the sun. It made me think about how fermentation works, like with old fruit or something. I mean, maybe the flies are part of that process, even if it's gross. Idk, dealing with bugs just seems to come with the territory in apartments.
