The $60 bokashi bin I bought was pretty much a scam

I saw all these apartment composting blogs raving about bokashi bins and how they don't smell, so I ordered one for $60 off Amazon back in March. For three weeks I layered my food scraps with the bran like the instructions said, but every time I opened it, the smell was awful and I saw little white worms in there. Turns out my bin wasn't airtight enough for the fermentation process to work right, and I ended up tossing the whole thing in the regular trash. Has anyone else had bad luck with a particular composting method or brand in a small space?

Oh man yeah I just use a regular bucket with a tight lid and it works fine.
