Finally got my bokashi bin to stop smelling so bad

I was ready to give up on composting in my 500 sq ft apartment because my bokashi bin was getting this weird sour smell after a few days. Turns out I was dumping too much citrus peel and not draining the liquid often enough. Last week I started draining it every 3 days and mixing in a handful of shredded newspaper with each layer. The smell basically vanished overnight and the compost is actually breaking down faster now. Anyone else deal with the bokashi stink problem and find a fix that worked for them?

Nah, just sounds like you weren't draining it enough.

Yeah, "not draining it enough" is EXACTLY what I thought too until my friend Sarah had a totally different issue. She did everything right with draining, but her whole setup collapsed because she used regular potting soil instead of a cactus mix. So @river_bailey2 I'd check your soil type before blame it on drainage alone, because that mistake is way more common than people admit.
