Warning: The $60 anime box set I grabbed at a convention was a bootleg

I picked up a complete collection of a 90s sci-fi anime at a booth in Dallas last spring for 60 bucks. Thought I got a great deal until I played the discs and the subtitles were clearly machine translated, with character names spelled wrong. The video quality was fuzzy and the menus didn't work either. Has anyone else fallen for these bootleg sellers at conventions and found a reliable way to spot them ahead of time?

Machine translated subtitles" - yeah that's exactly what happened with mine too. The first episode had the main character's name as "Jhon" instead of "John" lol. I usually ask to see the disc menu or the back artwork, if the print looks washed out or the logo is slightly off, that's a dead giveaway.

Oh totally @grayb64, the "Jhon" thing made me laugh too. I had one bootleg set where the subtitles kept saying "I am going to the bathroom" when the character was clearly heading to a spaceship lol. The disc menu is always a dead giveaway though, the fonts look super cheap and blurry.
