I finally saw the real numbers on anime production and it shook me
Was digging through that annual industry report from the Japanese Animation Creators Association and found out the average animator makes about 1.2 million yen a year. That's like $8,000 USD. For a 10 hour day. Six days a week. I knew the industry was rough but I thought the numbers were closer to living wage. My crew guys would quit if I asked them to work for that. How do studios even keep people in the pipeline? Has anyone else looked at those reports or is it just me?
Check the JAniCA report every year and the pay gap between key animators and in-betweeners is the real killer, most of those kids burn out before they ever move up. Studios keep the pipeline full by churning through new grads who don't know better yet.
