Can we talk about that filler episode debate in the rewatch thread

Last week I jumped into a rewatch thread for a 90s mecha show and mentioned how a certain beach episode actually adds character depth. Someone came back with a wall of text saying filler is always trash and I just don't get pacing. I tried to explain that the manga skipped that scene entirely, but the anime made it work, and they hit me with 'you must love Naruto arcs too.' I get that filler gets a bad rep, but 20 minutes of downtime between big fights can build tension if done right. Has anyone else gotten jumped on just for liking a slower episode in a classic series?

Best move is to just say "cool, skip it then" and move on. You're not gonna win that fight, and honestly the beach episode might be the only part of that show that actually ages well
