Appreciation post: My cousin in Austin got me to rewatch Evangelion at 2am and the elevator scene hit way harder this time
My cousin Marcus stayed over last weekend and we ended up talking about anime until 2am, which is when he asked me why I always skip the quieter episodes on rewatches. I told him I just want the big fights, and he pushed back hard, saying the slow character stuff is the actual point of the show. So we threw on episode 22 of Evangelion right there on the couch, and that elevator scene with Rei and Asuka just sitting in total silence for almost a full minute genuinely rattled me this time. I have seen that show three times and somehow I never really sat with how much that quiet moment says about both of them. Do you guys have a scene that only lands on a second or third watch?
I used to be the same way and always fast forwarded to the action stuff because the slow parts felt boring to me. But after rewatching the whole show again last year, those quiet scenes are the ones I end up thinking about for days, like the one where Shinji just stands there at the train station. Kudos to your cousin for calling you out on it.
