The guy at the camera swap in Portland sold me a roll of expired film for a buck and now I shoot it more than fresh stock
I always figured expired film was a waste of money, why risk fogged shots and weird colors when a fresh roll costs 9 bucks at my local shop. Then last month I hit the camera swap at the Portland Expo Center and this older guy had a whole bin of film with 2011 expiration dates, so I grabbed one roll of Kodak Gold for a dollar just to see. Shot it in my Pentax K1000 on a rainy walk through the neighborhood and the photos came back with this warm, soft look that I honestly liked better than anything my fresh stock gave me. I've now run 6 rolls of old film through that camera and not one came back blank, which I did not expect at all. The trick so far has been rating it one stop slower and letting the lab know it's old so they can push it a little. Has anyone else had good luck with expired film, or am I just getting lucky with this guy's stash?
