That brand new torque wrench from Snap-On was reading 10% low from day one

Bought a 3/8 split beam torque wrench from the Snap-On truck last month for $450. Used it on a dozen jobs, felt fine. Then I checked it against the old Craftsman beam style I keep in the drawer. The Snap-On was clicking at 80 inch-pounds when the old wrench said 72. Took it back to the truck and the guy said 'oh yeah, some of those have a bad batch of springs.' Didn't even blink. Who else has gotten a brand name tool that was just plain wrong out of the box?

Did you check if the serial number fell in the recall range? Snap-On had a service bulletin on some of those split beams from late last year, but they don't exactly advertise it. I had an older 3/8 that drifted after a drop and the truck guy swapped the spring and recalibrated it for free, took like 15 minutes. Might be worth asking if they can just swap the spring assembly instead of going through a full return headache.

Oh man, that "bad batch of springs" line would have made me mad. Like you paid $450 for a torque wrench and they just shrug it off like it's no big deal. I had a similar thing happen with a brand new digital caliper from a name brand company where the display would flicker and give wrong readings straight out of the box. It's really frustrating when you spend good money on something that's supposed to be professional grade and it's just junk from the start. Makes you wonder if they even test these things before boxing them up.
