My roommate keeps cooking frozen fries at 400 degrees for 20 minutes

I swear, our whole apartment fills with smoke every single time. He just dumps the bag in the basket and sets it to max. I finally timed it last week, and after 12 minutes they were basically charcoal. The manual for our basic model says 380 for 15 minutes, and shaking them halfway. It matters because now our smoke alarm has a weekly workout. Has anyone else had to teach an adult the basics of frozen food?
