My town's cleanup day won't take used finish cans, so now what?

Our town had a big cleanup day, and I had a bunch of empty stain and polyurethane cans. They refused to take them, saying it's hazardous waste, but the drop-off center is miles away and only open weekdays. How do you guys handle getting rid of old finish containers without a car?

Hardware stores sometimes take back empty cans for recycling, call around.

Remember my buddy Nate had that exact problem last fall. He ended up calling a local handyman he found online, just some guy with a truck. Nate paid him twenty bucks to swing by and take a whole box of old paint cans to the drop off center on his way to another job. Was way cheaper than a rental car, you know? Might be worth asking around in a local group or something.
