The difference a proper gravel base made on a job in Bend last month
We did a 200 foot cedar fence line where the first 50 feet had the old, shallow gravel base from the last fence. The new 150 feet got a full 4 inch deep layer of 3/4 minus gravel packed down. After the first big rain, the old section was already leaning, but the new part was solid as a rock. Has anyone else seen a problem that clear from just changing the base prep?

Wish I had a picture of my first deck project to show you. Let's just say the "gravel base" was more of a light sprinkling, and the whole thing looked like a funhouse mirror after one winter.

That "funhouse mirror after one winter" line from @kelly_coleman61 hits hard. I used to think a little gravel was just fine, that the posts would hold. My first shed build proved me wrong. The ground froze and one corner sank a good three inches, left the door looking like a weird parallelogram. Now I dig down like I'm looking for treasure and pack that base so tight nothing moves.
