Unpopular opinion: I skip the maker's computer tool for repairs

Most guys use it, but I learned to read the error codes straight from the panel. It's faster and I catch things the software misses.

Look at the full system scan the computer tool provides, it's way more than just codes. That live data stream shows you exactly how everything is interacting in real time. Skipping it means you miss hidden issues that never trigger a simple panel light. Modern cars are too complex for old school methods alone. You might get lucky sometimes, but consistent fixes need the full diagnostic picture. Relying only on basic codes is like trying to fix a smartphone with a screwdriver.

My buddy's shop software said his truck had an electrical fault. He spent hours on it before spotting a simple coolant leak the computer never flagged. Sometimes the old school method just finds what the fancy tools overlook.

Exactly, that "full system scan" faithhunt mentioned can still miss physical problems. A scanner reads data from sensors, but if a sensor itself is broken or there's a leak, the data is garbage. You need eyes on the actual parts to see cracks, wet spots, or loose wires the computer assumes are fine. Tools are great, but they only know what they're told to check.
