Did you try using a quick-set compound instead of the regular stuff? That saved me once when I had to redo a bead that took forever the first time... just had to work faster. Way less frustration than trying to finesse it with all-purpose mud.

Wait hold on, I think you're mixing up two different things here. Quick-set compound and all-purpose mud are for totally different jobs. Quick-set is great for taping and filling gaps because it hardens chemically, but if you're talking about redoing a bead of caulk or something, that's a whole different ball game. All-purpose mud is for drywall finishing, not for sealing gaps around trim or tubs where you need flexibility. Just want to make sure you're using the right stuff so you don't end up with cracks later like I did when I used joint compound on a window bead.
