My cousin's a marine biologist and she called our work 'reverse geology'
We were talking about my last job on the Columbia River, moving 800 cubic yards a day, and she said we're basically un-layering the earth's history with every bucket. It made me think... are we just moving dirt, or are we actually doing something bigger? Where do you guys fall on that?

Wow, that's actually a really cool way to look at it! I was a surveyor for a big site prep crew, and we'd joke we were just moving dirt from point A to point B. But one time an archaeologist showed up and pointed out we'd just exposed a layer with old pottery shards. It totally changed my view. You're not just moving dirt, you're the first person to see that spot in centuries. Your cousin is right, it's way bigger than it seems.
