Shoutout to my mom for making me try dollar store clay for a project

I was about to drop $30 on proper sculpting clay for a little figurine I wanted to make. My mom grabbed a $1.50 pack from the craft aisle and said 'just try it, what's the worst that happens?' Turns out it worked fine for a small project like this. Has anyone else had luck with the cheaper materials for stuff you're not sure about?

So you're telling me you were about to drop thirty bucks on clay for a little figurine you weren't even sure you'd finish? Sounds like you were ready to commit to a hobby before you even knew if you liked it. I mean, sure, dollar store clay can be crumbly and leave your hands feeling like you rubbed them on chalk, but for a test run it's kind of a no-brainer. Isn't the whole point of trying something new seeing if you even want to do a second one before you go all in on premium materials?

Honestly @walker.rowan brings up a solid point about not going all in on a hobby right away, but dollar store clay isn't always as crumbly as people say. Tbh I've used it for little ornaments and it holds up fine if you let it dry slow and don't mess with it too much. Ngl the texture can leave a weird residue on your fingers though, kind of like dusty chalk. But for a test run it's hard to beat a buck fifty when you're just messing around.
