I saw a terrarium at the Portland garden show that made me question my whole setup

It was in a huge, clear apothecary jar, maybe 5 gallons, but the grower had used a false bottom made from plastic egg crate instead of gravel. They said it kept the water moving better and stopped root rot. I've always used a thick layer of small stones, but now I'm torn. Is the extra work of cutting and fitting the plastic grid worth it for better air flow, or is the classic stone layer just simpler and safer? What's your take on drainage layers?

Well, my old gravel setup is looking pretty sad now. Sounds like @james_martin93 is onto something with that egg crate trick. I might have to try it, even if my first attempt will probably look like a toddler's art project.

Switched to egg crate last year and my plants stopped dying on me.
