Went from tapping the portafilter to leveling with a paperclip

I used to just smack the portafilter on the counter to settle the grounds before tamping, but after 3 straight weeks of channelling I switched to using a paperclip to break up clumps and level it. Now I get way fewer sour shots, have any of you tried something this dumb that actually worked?

Picked up a chopstick from a takeout order once and used it to stir my grounds before tamping. It worked way better than it should have, honestly.

Done the same thing with a paperclip once when I didn't have a cheap WDT tool. Just straightened it out and used it like a mini rake. Those chopsticks are great though because the wood is soft enough not to scratch your basket. Keep an eye out for loose splinters though, one got stuck in my grounds and made a mess in the cup.
