One harsh comment about my color grading changed my whole showcase setup

Some rando on a critique thread said my neon-heavy pieces looked like 'gas station signage at 2am' and honestly, they were right. I reworked my last 3 pieces using a muted palette from a desert photo I took near Tucson, and the gallery folks actually stopped to look. Has anyone else had a single brutal critique that made you rethink your entire style, or was it just me?

That Tucson palette thing you did makes total sense, since pulling colors from a real place forces you to ditch the shortcuts. I had a teacher once say my stuff looked like "a screensaver threw up" and I spent a whole month just photographing shadows and dirt to rebuild my eye. Sometimes one honest gut punch is worth more than a hundred "nice work" comments, you know?
