PSA: My old shop foreman's injector torque advice nearly cost me a cylinder head
Back in March at a shop outside Tulsa, my foreman told me to skip the torque angle gauge and just go by feel on the injector hold-down bolts, said it was faster and he'd done it for 15 years. I listened because he was the guy signing my checks, you know? Well, that engine came back two weeks later with a tick, and when I pulled the valve cover the #4 injector was sitting loose enough to wobble by hand. Turns out he'd been getting away with it on older Cummins engines, but this was a newer Volvo D13 where the spec is super tight and you absolutely need that torque wrench with the angle dial. I had to swallow my pride and tell the customer we needed to re-torque all six injectors, which meant new gaskets and about 8 hours of my weekend, plus the shop ate the parts cost. My foreman just shrugged and said 'well, that's how we did it in 2008', which tells me he hasn't updated his methods in over a decade. Has anyone else run into old-school shortcuts that flat out don't work on the newer emissions-era motors, and how do you push back without starting a fight in the bay?
