Guy told me my torque wrench habits were lazy, and he was right
Had a fella watching me button up a head on a 6.7 Cummins a few weeks back and he flat out told me I was wasting time. I'd always done the old pattern, snug everything down, then run my final spec pass in one go from the middle out. He said that's how you get a gasket leak down the road because the clamp load never evens out. Said to do it in three steps at 40, 70, then full spec, and rotate the pattern each pass. I argued with him for ten minutes, then tried it on the next job out of spite. Took me maybe four extra minutes and the bolts all pulled down way smoother, no creaking, no fighting. Went back and looked at a couple of the jobs I did his way versus my old way and I can see the difference in how the bolts feel at the end. Now I do it on every head and every intake, no exceptions. Any of you run a torque sequence in steps like that, or am I the only one who had to get told?
