Yeah that separate network trick is solid. Did a factory reset on my own gear last month and changed every default password to random stuff. Also make sure your router's firmware is actually up to date, that's a big one people miss.

Man, that thermostat story is legit creepy! Waking up sweating because someone messed with your settings from the outside is a nightmare. It really shows how this stuff isn't just about data, it can mess with your actual home. That's smart to put all those devices on their own separate network. Makes total sense to keep them away from your main computers and phones.

Honestly your "freaked out" feeling is totally valid. My buddy had his solar inverter hacked last year, someone kept changing his thermostat to 90 degrees in the middle of the night. He had to do a full factory reset and set up a separate wifi network just for that stuff.
