Can we talk about the time my whole shop got locked out by ransomware?

Honestly, it was about five years back at my electrical shop in Spokane. I came in on a Monday morning and every computer screen just showed that red skull and crossbones message demanding two grand in Bitcoin. Tbh, I felt like an idiot because I knew about backups but never got around to setting them up properly. It turned out my old bookkeeping software had a security hole that hadn't been patched in years. I lost almost a full week of invoices and client notes trying to rebuild everything from paper records. Now I run automated backups to an external drive every single night, no excuses. Has anyone else had to rebuild after something like that, and what did you change first?

Man, that's rough. My buddy's print shop got hit last year and it was a total mess. He had to start over with a whole new system and now he's paranoid about clicking any email link.

Ugh, I used to think that stuff was overblown until @coleman.jade's story made me get it.
