That screenwriting professor who told me to kill my favorite scene was right

Honestly, last semester my professor made me cut a 3 page monologue from my short script. I was so mad about it for like a week. But when I read the final draft without it, the pacing was way better and the whole story actually made sense. Has anyone else had to chop something they loved and ended up grateful for it?

Oh man, I had to cut a whole character once and I was convinced it would ruin everything. Turns out that character was basically just standing around being sarcastic and adding nothing to the plot. I mean, I spent like two weeks sulking about it and then my script actually got picked for a reading, so I guess the professor was right, whatever. It's annoying when they're right about this stuff, but they usually are, idk.

Read somewhere that Stephen King kills a character on every third page or something. Definitely applies here @amy692, sometimes they're just dead weight.
