Realized my whole fantasy map was just one big fake river, 4 prompts deep
I kept writing prompts about a kingdom split by a river and my beta reader finally asked why every town was on the same side. Turns out I'd been picturing the water flowing uphill in my head for like 6 drafts, so the whole trade war plot made zero sense. How do you all keep your made up geography straight without drawing it out first?
I gotta disagree about drawing it out first, cuz that can lock you in before the story even finds itself. What worked for me was writing a quick "water flows downhill, always" rule and checking each town scene against it whenever I moved a plot piece. Saving the real map for after the draft keeps the story from being bossed around by geography that might not even stay in the book.
