Choosing the dark ending over the happy one for my flash fic

Had to pick between two endings for a 1,200 word story set in Portland. Happy ending felt safe but fake. I went with the dark one where the main character loses her memory. Beta readers at the meetup were split, six loved it, three hated it. But it got the most comments of anything I've posted. Has anyone else taken the grim route and regretted it or seen it pay off?
