A girl in my writing group said 'just write the boring part fast' and now my 800 word story drafts itself
Last Tuesday at the library in Portland my writing group met and we were talking about why our first drafts stall out around page two, and this woman Dana said she writes the boring parts fast, like a grocery list, just to get to the scenes she actually cares about. I tried it on a prompt about a broken vending machine and knocked out 800 words in 40 minutes, which never happens for me. Does anyone else write the filler first and fix it later, or do you have to slow down and get every line clean before moving on?
Dana" just handed you the writing version of eating your veggies first so you can get to dessert. The catch is you have to actually go back and season the veggies, otherwise you end up with a draft that reads like a receipt for a vending machine nobody cares about. Write the junk fast, sure, but the cleanup is where the story actually shows up.
