That one Tuesday in July when my crooked carrots finally paid off
So last July I pulled up what I thought was a total loss. I had planted these carrot seeds way too close together back in April because I ran out of space and just dumped the rest of the packet in one row. They came up all twisted and fused together, some looking like little orange hands flipping me off. I almost tossed the whole bunch in the compost, but my neighbor Deb told me to just scrub them and roast them whole. I did, with some olive oil and salt, and my kids ate every single one without complaining, which never happens. Turned out the crowded soil made them sweeter somehow, or maybe it was just me being proud of not wasting food. Now I plant them too close on purpose. Has anyone else noticed that the ugly ones actually taste better, or am I just telling myself that?
