Rant: My neighbor's compost pile looked like garbage soup but grew the best tomatoes on the block
I laughed at my neighbor Dave two summers ago when he started dumping coffee grounds and eggshells into a plastic bin behind his garage in Toledo. It sat there cooking in the sun all July and smelled like a dead raccoon, and I told him nothing that rotten could help a garden. He ignored me and spread that black sludge around his tomato plants in August anyway. By September he was handing out tomatoes the size of softballs, and his plants were still kicking when mine had gone yellow and bare. I finally asked what his secret was, and he just pointed at the bin and said the worms do the work. So now I have my own nasty bucket brewing out back. Anyone else got a compost setup that looks like a crime scene but actually works?
