My prize cucumber turned into a gourd balloon overnight
I left that big boy on the vine two extra days while I was hauling brush in Greenville and came back to a 14 inch, pale green balloon with seeds rattling inside like maracas. It looked so perfect on Tuesday, fat and dark, and by Friday it was hollow enough to knock on. I cut it open anyway, scooped out the mush, and the remaining flesh tasted like a wet sponge with a hint of regret. My neighbor laughed and said I should've entered it in the county fair as abstract art. Do deformed cukes ever come back sweet if you catch them earlier, or is that just how they go once they hit that stage? I'm about to yank the whole plant and start over with a bush variety for the August patch.
