My neighbor's 40 year old crabapple tree out by the curb in Tulsa is dropping fruit that looks like bruised golf balls

She lets me take as many as I want since she says they're too ugly to do anything with. I filled a 5 gallon bucket in about 10 minutes and half of them had brown spots and weird bumps. Made applesauce out of the worst looking ones and it came out sweet with a little tang, way better than the perfect ones from the store. Anyone else got a tree or bush that puts out ugly stuff that tastes better than it looks?
