Rigger on my Spokane job called my swing 'lazy', then showed me why he was half right
Last Tuesday I was setting roof trusses on a build in Spokane and a rigger with 22 years in walked up while I was swinging a load out and said my swing was lazy. I got hot about it for a second, then he had me watch the tagline while he pointed out how I was fighting the load instead of letting the house do the work. He told me I was chasing every little move with the stick instead of setting up my boom angle before the pick even left the ground. I tried it on the next 6 picks and cut my cycle time way down without the load swinging back on me. Any of you ever get called out by a rigger or ground guy and end up learning something, or was it just hot air?
22 years in means he's been doing it since before half the guys on that Spokane crew were born, and that's exactly why I'd push back on this. Old hands get set in their ways and what works for his back and his habits might just be slowing you down. "Letting the house do the work" sounds great until you're on a windy day and the load decides to do its own work into somebody's truck. Chasing the stick with small moves is how you catch a swing before it gets bad, not laziness. Six picks is nothing, that's one afternoon, not proof. Bet he couldn't show you a single number that says his way is faster over a whole week.
