Our little lawsuit over damaged pallets turned out better than expected

Last year, my hardware store got a shipment where half the pallets were crushed, ruining a bunch of power tools. We sent a demand letter saying we'd sue for the loss, and the supplier caved and paid up fast. I've heard people argue that dragging vendors to court over smaller damages is dumb, because lawyer fees can wipe out any gain and burn bridges. But from our side, that quick win, even though it was only like five thousand bucks, showed our team that standing firm works. Now, our purchase orders have way better terms for shipping faults, which saves headaches down the line, lmao. So, do you think small companies should push back legally on these minor issues, or is it smarter to just eat the cost and move on? Curious what others in similar spots have done.

What exactly did your demand letter say to get the supplier to pay so fast? Did you have a lawyer write it, or was it done in-house? Also, curious about the new terms in your purchase orders, are they just for shipping faults or do they cover other issues too?

Did you cite the exact contract clause?

For the demand letter, we just clearly stated how they failed to meet the agreement. Bringing up small claims court usually gets them to settle quickly without lawyers. The new terms in our purchase orders also apply to late deliveries and defective products, not only shipping faults.
