A quick talk with a retired judge at a coffee shop changed how I see settlement offers

I was grabbing coffee yesterday and got talking with this older guy, a retired judge from the county circuit. He said something like, 'You know, sometimes the best win is the fight you don't have to finish.' He was talking about a case he saw drag on for three years over a $50,000 contract dispute, where both sides lost more in legal fees than the money at stake. It just hit different coming from him, not a client or my boss. Made me rethink pushing so hard on a small claim we're dealing with. Anyone else had a moment that made you pause on a litigation strategy?

That judge's story is spot on. I've seen people burn through twenty grand in lawyer bills to win ten. Sometimes you just gotta know when to fold.

Man, I've learned that the hard way too.
