TIL the hard way: that '17th century' map of California as an island was actually a 20th century reprint
Picked up what I thought was a real 1650 map from a flea market in Boise for $80. Took me 6 weeks and a lot of squinting at watermarks to figure out it was a 1980s reproduction. The paper felt too smooth and the ink smelled like a modern printer. Now I always bring a cheap magnifier and check the chain lines. Has anyone else gotten burned by a sneaky reprint, what did you look for?
