Question about the right grind for a French press

I keep seeing people at my coffee shop in Austin use a fine grind for their French press, saying it makes it stronger. But every guide I've read says coarse is key to avoid sludge. I tried both ways at home last month, and the fine grind just gave me bitter mud. Are we just accepting gritty coffee now, or is there a real debate here?

Wait, have you seen those people who put eggshells in their coffee grounds? My weird uncle swears it makes it less bitter, but I'm not trying that experiment.

Eggshells in coffee sounds like a science fair project gone wrong! My old roommate used to put a pinch of salt in the grounds to cut bitterness, and it actually worked. I still do it sometimes with cheap, super dark roast beans.

Trust me, I've made that bitter mud mistake enough times to be an expert. Coarse grind for life.
