Pro tip: that 'plant a tree for every purchase' thing is mostly a scam

Back in March I bought a hoodie from a brand that said they plant a tree for every order. Felt good about it for like 2 months. Then I actually looked up the charity they partner with on a site called GiveTrack last weekend. Turns out they only planted like 12% of what they claimed in 2024. The hoodie fell apart after 3 washes too. Anyone else dig into these programs and find the same shady stuff?

Is it really worth getting that worked up over though? I mean, sure, those tree planting claims are bogus, but isn't that kind of expected with any marketing these days? You bought a hoodie, not a carbon offset certificate. I get being disappointed the thing fell apart, but chasing down the charity records feels like going a step too far. Most companies are just throwing a few bucks at some random foundation to look good on Instagram. Just buy clothes that last and skip the feel-good nonsense.

You know, I used to think pretty much the same way, that it was just par for the course with marketing fluff. But the part about the hoodie falling apart plus the charity records thing actually changed my mind a little. If they're gonna lie about one thing, it makes me wonder what else they're cutting corners on, and that's worth digging into in my experience.
