Wire brush vs. poly brush, my flue says otherwise now
Been using a wire brush on this old house's chimney for 5 years. Last month I ran a poly brush through it just to see, and the amount of soot that came down was double. The wire brush was polishing the walls, not actually scrubbing them. Now I'm wondering if I've been leaving creosote buildup for years on every job I did with wire. Anyone else switch brushes and find their old method was doing half the work? Or is this just a one-off with this particular flue in Pittsburgh?

The flue liner material matters more than people give it credit for. I had a clay tile liner in my old place in Ohio, and the wire brush actually worked fine because the surface was smooth. But my sister’s place has a parged liner with rough patches, and the poly brush pulls way more out of those small pits. If yours is an older flue, there might be a lot of irregular spots that the wire just glides over. Worth checking what your liner is made of before you settle on one brush.
