Warning: That creosote log is not a replacement for scraping

I pulled a flue last Tuesday in Dayton where the homeowner swore they used those cleaning logs every month for 2 years. The glaze was still a quarter inch thick in spots, and honestly it was harder than normal creosote, like baked on enamel. Those logs just dry out the top layer, they don't break down the real buildup near the smoke shelf. Anyone else seeing chimney fires start in systems that were 'maintained' with only those things?
