Got a wake up call about flue sizing from an old timer in Ohio

Was on a job last Tuesday out near Canton, this retired sweep named Bob came by to grab some spare brushes from his son who now runs the route. We got to talking about a house where the liner looked way too big for the chimney and I was about to just slap in an oversized one and call it done. Bob stopped me and said, "Son, that draft is gonna be starved, you'll get creosote painting the whole thing in two months." He was right, I never thought about how much the flue size affects the burn, just figured bigger meant easier to clean. Now I actually measure the fireplace opening and run the math before I order anything. Anyone else get schooled by a veteran on something you thought you had figured out?
