Forgot to check the cap on a 10-year-old wood stove insert last Tuesday and got a face full of soot when I pulled the brush out

I was up on the roof near Lexington, pulled the rod back too fast, and that fine black powder just rained down on me - took three showers to get it out of my hair, has anyone else had a cap just crumble like that on an older setup?

That dry soot is the worst. Had an old cap on a stove in Maine that basically turned into dust when I touched it. Real pain to clean out of everything.

Got the same thing happen to me with an old stove pipe in a cabin upstate. Touched it and it just crumbled into this fine black powder that got everywhere. @jade271 you're right that dry soot is the worst because it gets into every tiny crack and you're still finding it days later. Had to vacuum the whole place twice and I still found little black smudges on my clothes for a week.
