A sweep in Columbus showed me I was rodding the flue way too fast
Was doing a job in Columbus back in March and the old sweep next to me stopped me mid-pull. He said I was running the rod up too fast and skipping the shoulder where most of the soot hides. He had me slow down and do short pushes at the top of each flue, and the stuff that came loose was way more than I'd been getting. Been doing it that slow ever since and my callbacks for smoky smells have gone way down. How fast do you all run your rods on a dirty clay flue?
