Saw a friend in Chicago try to clean his pan with a metal scouring pad
We were cooking at his place last month and he grabbed one of those green steel wool pads to scrub out some stuck-on bits. I had to stop him right there (I mean, you could hear the metal on metal sound). I told him that stuff will just scrape off all your hard work and leave tiny scratches. Has anyone else had to talk a friend down from a cleaning mistake like that?

Metal on metal gets the job done fast, @emerydixon.

Ugh, that sound is the worst. Had a roommate who would do the same thing to my good pans.

My buddy's old roommate used a metal fork on his nonstick pan every single morning, scraping up eggs like he was digging for gold. The sound was like nails on a chalkboard mixed with a dying robot, @emerydixon. He finally hid his good pan in his closet and left out a cheap one from the dollar store. The roommate never even noticed the swap, just kept on scraping.
