Took 8 years to realize I was stretching against the grain

I laid carpet for a living since Tulsa, always running the power stretcher the same direction as the roll. Last Tuesday a homeowner in Broken Arrow watched me work and asked why I was fighting the carpet's backing. He grabbed the other end and we ran it sideways, and the wrinkles just melted away. I checked the manufacturer specs later and sure enough, my whole approach was backwards for that weave. Now I look at the backing pattern before every stretch, not just the pile. Anyone else discover a basic step they'd been botching for years?
