That $89 seam iron finally paid for itself

I picked up a cheap seam iron from a local supply house after my old one died mid-job in Austin. It ended up saving me a full redo on a 12 foot seam that was starting to fray, definitely worth the money. Anyone else had luck with budget seam irons or should I just stick with the brand names?

Bought a Weller from a garage sale for 20 bucks and it’s been rocking for two years straight. The trick is checking the heat plate for even contact on old seams, that’s what kills cheap ones. For a 12 footer like yours, I’d say halfway through the run, stop and let it cool, then recheck the temp. Saves you from melting the backing or missing the fray.
