Picking up speed squares for layout work sparked a tool debate
I got good with a speed square on framing jobs and now rely on it for quick marks. Some guys say it's the only way to go for accuracy, but others stick to combo squares for more jobs. Which side are you on for everyday layout tools?

Is there really a right answer here, or are we just splitting hairs? Both speed squares and combo squares do the job well if you know how to use them. I've seen guys make perfect cuts with either tool, and mess ups with both too. It often comes down to what you learned on and what feels good in your hand. Getting hung up on which square is better misses the point that skill matters most. So maybe we should focus more on practice than on picking sides in a tool debate.

I see where @wade_hall is coming from, but I have to disagree. The tool you choose actually makes a big difference on some jobs. A speed square is fine for basic cuts, but a combo square can handle layouts a speed square just can't. Sure, skill is key, but fighting with the wrong tool wastes time and leads to errors. Knowing which square to grab for the task at hand is part of being good at this work.
