Blew $60 on a tray tower kit that collapsed into a puddle of green beans

I saw a video where some kid built a 7-tray tower using rubber bands from the office supply closet, so I tried it at lunch and it wobbled for about 4 seconds before dumping chocolate milk everywhere in front of the whole table. Has anyone figured out if you need the deep trays or the flat ones for this to hold? I'm out $60 for the kit I bought online and I'm not doing that again.
